The Fertilizer consumption of Zambia currently stands at approximately 500, 000metric tons. The demographics suggests that there is a large market provided by the farmers especially among small scale farmers who are being supported by the government and other partners to help them increase their productivity.
The business will target the following consumers of fertilizer and other agriculture inputs in Zambia particularly in selected and potential districts in the country.
The country has more than 2miilion active small scale farmers who demand agriculture inputs every year throughout the 12 months. Most of the farmers are highly engaged in agriculture activities during rain reason. This implies farmers are engaged into production of mainly field crops such as maize, soya beans, beans, sunflower and other legumes. Much of these products demand use of fertilizers such as compound D(N10, P20, K10) and urea (46%).
Above all, the company is actively involved in servicing farmers under the farmer input support programme (FISP). A programme services 1million (1,000,000) small scale farmers Country wide.
Small scale farmers is a major client under Greenfield Commodities Ltd. Each season not less than 10,000 small scale farmers are serviced. This gives us a stock position of 3000metric tons supplied yearly. The national fertilizer demand is at 300,000metric tones under farmer input support programme, close to 600,000 metric tons outside government subsidy.
Agro dealers are small business entities that operate at small scale but are dotted throughout the country in all districts. They have strong farmer network system. The use of agro dealers in input distribution has worked so effectively in the districts. Zambia has more than 2000 registered agro-dealers and these provide a strong customer base as they buy in big quantities to service small scale farmers and a few large scale.
The country has more than 10 major suppliers of fertilizer, seed and chemicals such as insecticide and pesticides. The national supplier can provide market once the firm has more stock in the country. The supplier buy in huge quantities to meet the demand of government once they have been given contracts to
Greenfield Commodities Ltd will focus on two customer groups
The government of Zambia through the Ministry of Agriculture is the major buyer of inputs of fertilizer in the country. The Ministry procures inputs for distribution to small scale farmers participating in the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP). FISP is a government subsidy programme supporting small scale farmers.
These are the distributors that interface with both the commercial farmers and the small scale farmers.
This group imports fertilizer from different places including Middle East, Morocco, Mozambique, and South Africa for supply in Zambia. This group has clients in both the government, Agro dealers, and also the commercial farmers.
There has been an increase in the demand of fertilizer in the country. This has been necessitated by technology transfer and extension messages that are encouraging farmers to use more of conventional fertilizer as one way of improving productivity. The increment can also be attributed to the government policy which has provided the provision of subsidized fertilizer to one million farmers annually. The migration of White farmers from Zimbabwe to Zambia has also pushed the production of different produces to increase also increasing the consumption of fertilizers in the country.
The fertilizer consumption in the country is expected to be more than 500,000 metric tons by 2021. This is partly because of the government’s realization of the need to diverse from depending more on mining to more of Agriculture. With this market potential, the Business will be in a position to sell more than 100,000 metric tons annually.
